This Post is SOOO Anti-Lenten...

...that I'll try to atone for it with a post after it.

I can't decide whether to put another bookcase down the center of the spare bedroom/bookroom. Right now everything in red are bookcases. I guess the shelves would have to be double-sided. Way too expensive. But maybe longterm that might be something...

Dear TSO,

If it's your own room, into which you do not invite many guests, then a very economical way to produce the effect you wish is the old college way--boards and blocks. With the number of books I have, I frankly can't afford much else, and since the books are the center of attaction anyway and the storage thereof the essential these work spectacularly well for double-sided shelving. However, I'm shocked, shocked, I tell you that there is room for a couch and a chair--you obviously are not doing this right!

(Always doing my best to encourage the worst. . .)

Steven

Perhaps something simple? The 1/8 cord rack is just $99 delivered.

Gracias for the suggestions... At first I thought Tom was suggesting I burn the books as firewood, but no Dominican would ever suggest that. Ha.

A couch and a chair does seem excessive, come to think of it. I'm still trying to get over Steven linking to a post with the title "Giving Up Book Buying".

Dear TS,

Easily enough explained--I was so horrified, shock, revolted, I wanted to warn everyone about this deadly and debilitating virus.

Yes--so much seating taking up room for books. I've always wanted the Louis L'Amour setup--movable shelves in front of shelves. I can tell you, even weeding through the collection, things are not getting appreciably better because I just keep adding. I've tried everything--but jettisoning seating is my first resort!

Steven

You may recall the true story of the bibliomaniac who quit taking showers/baths so that he could use his bathtub for books. You can't make it up.

Dear TSO,

Now there's a thought I hadn't had! Showers--books. Hmm. Tough choice--I wish you hadn't offered it.

Steven

Maybe if you move the couch into the center of the room - or trade it for a couple comfy chairs and a library table -- you could hire Mr. Duffy to build you a manwall for your books.

Good thought Emily but there's a picture window behind the couch that I forgot to draw in there. Wouldn't want to hide that with bookshelves (although come to think of it...).

A picture is worth a thousand words. How many pages of words for a picture window?

I'm surprised my sister didn't suggest stuffing the books underneath the couch. Also, stacks of books without a shelf are underrated. A stack of hardcovers can be an end table on which to set your...beverage. Or, for a real coffee table feel--four stacks of small books with a small sheet of plywood on top. Just a thought...

I've been lately going ye olde "stack the book" route by necessity. I'll probably need to just free up space in the basement and make a dramatic move of volumes there.
